How to Have Fast Food Without Going to the Drive-Thru

Do you want to know one of the secrets to getting food on the table fast without going to the drive-thru? Prepare your meals and snacks ahead of time. One of the greatest gifts that you can give to yourself is to come home after a busy day to a prepared meal and all you have to do is heat and eat. Creating your own “fast food” is a smart way to manage your weight because you will always have healthy food that is ready to eat. This probably sounds all well and good but when do you actually do the meal preparation?

CREATE A SCHEDULE. I admit that you have to schedule meal preparation time into your week but you will be amazed at how much food you can prepare in a short period of time. Last night in 90 minutes I prepared baked chicken breasts and salmon filets, roasted potatoes, steamed Brussels sprouts, a green salad, two pots of soup (two different kinds) and a batch of chocolate protein muffins. This amount of food will feed my family of five for two lunches and two dinners plus snacks.

SAVE TIME AND MONEY. For the time that it takes you to cook one meal you can add on a little time and cook three. You could do this plan twice a week and then enjoy a leftover night. Imagine all the time and money you could save. Cooking meals ahead of time does take some organization. Before you can prepare the meals you have to make sure that you have the ingredients on hand.

PLAN YOUR MEALS. My first step is always to check in the pantry to see what foods I have in stock. Sometimes I don’t get around to preparing one of the previous week’s meals and I still have the ingredients leftover, so there’s one new meal for the week. I like to ask my family’s input to see what meals they would like to eat that upcoming week. There’s a couple of meals right there. Then if I am ambitious I will try a new recipe.

AUTOMATE. Otherwise I check my seasonal meal plan list and choose a meal from there. I use an app called Food Planner which works great for me. My meals and grocery list are all in one place. Since the grocery list is on my phone there are no more messy paper lists and my meal plans and grocery list are always right at my finger tips. You can even input the ingredients for your recipes to be automatically added to your grocery list. I think having meals ready ahead of time is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
