Easy Ways to Build a Salad

Today I thought let’s build a salad. Are your salads boring or repetitive? You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to making a salad.

You need to start with a good base consisting of lettuce, or greens but you could also use a grain like quinoa as a base too.

For today’s salad let’s start with a base of romaine lettuce and spinach. Next you could add your chopped raw veggies like cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, celery, onion, and carrots.

After you get a solid base together now you can add the fun stuff. Here is where you can get pretty creative. Steamed broccoli, baked eggplant, grilled zucchini or portobello mushrooms are great additions. Quinoa or some brown rice would add some texture.

How about some protein? Add some  grilled chicken, hard boiled egg, or stir-fried tempeh. Now our salad is starting to take shape.

Some toppings for your salad could include feta cheese, sunflower seeds, or cranberries. I would recommend a lighter dressing since we really piled on the calories already so try a balsamic vinaigrette or maybe a little olive oil and lemon juice.

Today’s salad is more of a meal than side salad but you can eat a smaller portion to make it a side.

So to recap begin your salad with a good base of lettuce, greens, or grains. The next layer is some raw veggies. Next add some cooked veggies. Then add your protein. Top off your salad with some cheese, nuts or seeds and a light dressing. If you are watching your calories increase the veggies and decrease the nuts, seeds, cheese, and dressing.

Other additions that you can add to your salad creation are avocado, potatoes or  berries. You can also change up your salad according to the seasons. How about a hot salad in the winter and a crispy cold salad in the summer? What do you like to add to your salads?
